INVESTMENT PATTERNS
Since 1998 the Danish venture capital market has experienced stronger development than its international counterparts. The investment activity has almost tripled in Denmark, whereas in Europe and USA it has increased by 60% and 40% respectively.
Types of investments and sectors targeted
In recent years the share of initial investments has been stable at around 25-35%. However, the financial unbalance and the derived difficulties in exits via IPO’s means that many investors have been forced to reserve a larger share of capital for follow-up investments.
For a long time life science has been the primary segment for venture capital, and in 2007 the share was around 50%. By comparison, ICT accounts for approx. 34%. A new area of investment is cleantech, which in 2007 attracted 5% of the total investments, equalling DKK 100 million.

Geographic allocation
The Danish venture capital market is concentrated in and around Greater Copenhagen, which attracted 71% of all venture investments in 2007. The region especially attracts investments in the early development phases (i.e. seed and start-up) due to its high concentration of universities and innovative research environments.
